Introduction of New Organic Peroxide Label [IATA DGR 7.2.3.6]

The recently published 48th edition of the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations (IATA DGR) requires a new organic peroxide label. The new label, shown in IATA DGR Figure 7.3M, differs from the previously required label in color and symbol. The newly introduced label has a red background in the upper half and yellow background on the lower half. A fire symbol is displayed in black or white on the upper red half and “5.2” is displayed in the lower corner. Use of the new organic peroxide hazard label is being phased in over the next four years, becoming mandatory Jan. 1, 2011, according to IATA. Until then, the all-yellow label with the flame over circle symbol still can be used on packages of organic peroxides.

The new label (and placard) and transition period has been adopted in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) for vessel shipments and by the DOT for domestic shipments. For domestic air, vessel, and rail shipments, the transition date is the same as in the international rules, but for domestic highway shipments, it is extended until Jan. 1, 2014.

Labeling (and placarding) of dangerous goods is one of the topics covered in Environmental Resource Center’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods: Compliance with IATA and IMO Regulations course.
